What Works in the Arts

Yorkshire Futures has, this month, released the latest in it’s ‘What Works’ series – a research document into 20 good practice case studies for the Arts in Yorkshire and the Humber. The document takes in Arts projects from across the region including Sheffield, Leeds, Harrogate, York and the Sahara Women’s Group Textile Project run by the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust covering Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. The project was set up to help women from minority ethnic groups with mental health issues or learning disabilities access the Trusts services and as a place where members could meet, socialise and share their experiences. To offer an experience which would really help bring out the creative side of the group, organisers enlisted the help of Bradford arts organisation Kala Sangam. Committed to bringing people together through the use of South Asian art and music, Kala Sangam’s origins in 1993 owed much to founder Dr Shripati Upadhyaya’s interest in using art to help people with disabilities.
