Claire Wood: Homeless in Halifax
Feb 4th to May 6th 2012
February 5th marks the end of 'National Homeless Week' so these photographs of Halifax's homeless, showing where they have spent their nights, are timely. Photographer Claire Wood studied at Edinburgh’s Napier University and worked as an assistant in New York before going freelance in 2002. The ‘supportive’ magazine style embodied in her work for Marie Claire, Cosmo, Guardian Weekend etc. (see www.clairewood.com) offers an appropriate rebuttal to conventional treatments that dramatise the homeless by emphasising their status as ‘victims’. The project was commissioned by David Fawcett, chairman of 'Halifax Food and Support Drop In’ – a charity which has distributed over 13000 food parcels to destitute people in the town.
