Anita Henderson: Thresholds

'The 'thresholds' that preoccupy Anita Henderson are those where personal decisions have to be made – whether forced by economic changes, relationships or lifestyle choices. But these 'thresholds' are not actually hers. Anita's oil paintings, mezzotints and gum arabic prints depict 'stills' from Continental movies: moments where characters are viewed from the side or back and where it is their posture or proximity to physical thresholds (typically the door in an apartment) that offers interpretations.

Anita's interests lie in the globalization of culture that is paradoxically coupled with a breakdown in local communities. While the shared grammar of film can come to be consciously (and hence duplicitously) copied by audiences, these moments at least suggest the degree to which we aspire to understand other people's ‘thresholds’...
