Nick Dedic: An end to all that

Yorkshire born painter Nick Dedic is in his mid-20s and just completing his MA at Chelsea College of Art. His "vandalised old master paintings" are therefore appropriately dynamic and irreverent; but there's nothing callow here. Their execution surely justifies both his collegiate awards and a hectic exhibition track record. The intrusive marks and cartoon elements “see norms attacked and destroyed by the new and alien”. Nick suggests this is a metaphor for the ongoing challenge to cultural traditions, and cites the collapse of the trusted economic model and the east-ward shift of global hegemony. Certainly there is a reckless glee in seeing icons defaced that are associated with an authority that has ‘failed us’.
