Paul Crook: Houses, Bungalows and Flats
Paul Crook is not being ironic about the mundane, urban housescapes that he depicts in unsettling pinks. This is the Warwickshire-based artist's 'personal geography' and he is not seeking to deny it: "The brash and awkward acidic colours attract the viewer to something they might normally consider dull and familiar. These places mirror who we are and what we want from our lives," he says. Nonetheless, mirrors discomfit – and Paul is drawn to the "sense of uncertainty and unpredictability" that is latent in the created environment. The attempt to capture this quality evokes Paul's interest in "the relationship between the paint medium and the subject content". He addresses his canvases alternately with studied caution and with a speed that invites accident. "The work seems to emerge from a process of adding and removing until a position can be fixed as a resolution or statement". They are, in the end, about beauty.
